In a recent article in the January 2010 issue of Golf Monthly the rules regarding grooves were outlined as follows:

January 2010
All new models submitted to the R&A for testing must conform to new specifications. Condition of competition requiring players to use clubs with markings which conform to new specifications. Recommendation that this condition only be introduced on major professional tours.

The R&A recommend that the condition of competition be extended only to lower level professional tours and elite amateur events.

January 2024

The earliest date that the new groove rule will apply to all golfers at every level of the game.

This date will be reviewed in 2020 and may be extended.
